Botox temporarily reduces activity in selected facial muscles. Dermal fillers add volume or support to specific areas beneath the skin. Both are injectable treatments, but they address different concerns. Choosing between them starts with understanding what is causing the change you see.
At DermaGlow Lab & Aesthetics by Tatarian MD in Calabasas, Margarita Lupan, FNP, personally performs all injectable treatments. Her approach begins with assessing your face, skin and goals before recommending a product. Understanding the difference between muscle movement, volume loss and skin quality helps make that discussion more useful.
How Botox and fillers compare
| Question | Botox | Dermal fillers |
|---|---|---|
| What does it do | Temporarily reduces selected muscle activity | Adds volume or support in selected areas |
| What might it address | Certain lines associated with facial movement | Volume loss and some facial contours or folds |
| When do changes appear | Develop over several days | Depends on the product; some changes are gradual |
| How long does it last | Often about three to four months | Varies by product, area and individual response |
| What determines suitability | Medical history, anatomy and treatment goals | Medical history, anatomy, product and treatment goals |
These are general distinctions, not a way to diagnose your own treatment needs. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons overview of botulinum toxin and its dermal filler overview explain the two approaches.
What Botox can address
Botox is a brand of botulinum toxin that temporarily reduces selected muscle activity. Cosmetic treatment commonly targets frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. Our practice uses Botox and Dysport, FDA-approved botulinum toxin products with product-specific approved uses. They are different products, and the choice depends on the assessment.
Margarita often hears the assumption that Botox can address every sign of facial aging. It does not restore lost volume or serve as a general skin-quality treatment. Concerns such as nasolabial folds, which run from the sides of the nose toward the mouth, require a separate assessment rather than an assumption that Botox will correct them.
What dermal fillers can address
Fillers can restore or enhance volume and selected contours. The product and placement matter: a filler appropriate for one area is not automatically suitable for another. As Margarita explains, fillers also do not replace treatments specifically intended to address skin quality.
For lip enhancement, our practice primarily uses Restylane Kysse, a hyaluronic acid filler. Product selection is individualized rather than a promise that every patient needs the same treatment. Ask which material is recommended, why it suits the area and what it can realistically achieve.
Results and recovery need separate timelines
Botox results develop over several days. The American Academy of Dermatology describes effects lasting around three to four months, although individual responses vary. AAD guidance on botulinum toxin.
For fillers, the timeline depends on the product. An early change in fullness is not necessarily the settled result because swelling and bruising can affect the appearance. Duration also varies with the material, area and individual response. ASPS guidance on filler results.
Mention weddings, travel or photographs before scheduling. Allow time for recovery and reassessment. Margarita may recommend spacing injectable appointments and other procedures, including RF microneedling or Exion treatments, according to the treatment plan. Ask her to coordinate the sequence rather than choosing the interval yourself.
A natural appearance starts with a specific conversation
For Margarita, a natural-looking result means that you still look like yourself, with a more refreshed and balanced appearance. Explain what bothers you, what you like about your face and what would feel like too much change. These preferences help shape the treatment plan.
Your medical history belongs in that conversation too. Share previous injectable treatments, relevant health conditions, allergies, medications and supplements. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy. Ask for individualized preparation instructions rather than changing prescribed medication yourself. AAD guidance on preparing for botulinum toxin treatment.
She will not recommend or perform a treatment if you are not an appropriate candidate or if it is unlikely to achieve your desired outcome. Waiting, choosing another approach or proceeding without treatment may be the appropriate decision.
Consultation fees and treatment planning
Every consultation includes a thorough facial and skin assessment, a discussion of your concerns and goals, and an individualized treatment plan. Margarita considers your medical history, expectations and preferences alongside safety, realistic outcomes, treatment selection and recovery guidance.
The consultation fee is $25. If you purchase a treatment package, that fee is applied toward the package. Treatments can also be purchased individually. Packages generally offer better value at the practice, but ask for a comparison of the recommended options, what each includes and the total expected cost. A package should still fit your assessed needs.
Risks to discuss before making a decision
Both treatments can cause temporary reactions such as bruising, swelling or tenderness. Botox can also affect nearby muscles and cause effects such as temporary eyelid or brow drooping. Difficulty speaking, swallowing or breathing after treatment requires immediate medical attention. AAD answers about botulinum toxin safety.
With fillers, accidental injection into a blood vessel is uncommon but can cause serious injury, including tissue damage, vision loss or stroke. The FDA advises discussing the risks with a licensed healthcare professional who has appropriate training and experience. Ask how the practice recognizes and responds to complications.
Do not assume every filler can simply be dissolved. Removal can be difficult or impossible for some products. Ask what options would exist for the specific material being considered. FDA information on dermal fillers.
