If you are comparing EXION Clear RF and RF microneedling in Calabasas, you may have noticed that both names appear in conversations about smoother skin. They belong to the same treatment platform, but they are different procedures. Understanding that difference can help you ask for the right assessment and plan for recovery.

At DermaGlow Lab & Aesthetics by Tatarian MD, the decision starts with your skin and the change you hope to see. A concern about uneven color may lead to a different discussion than an indentation left by acne. The most useful question is what each treatment could contribute to your individual plan.

Two different ways of treating the skin

EXION Clear RF uses radiofrequency energy for fractional microablation, a form of skin resurfacing. BTL, the manufacturer, identifies Clear RF separately from its Fractional RF microneedling applicator. Sharing the EXION name does not make their treatment methods interchangeable.

EXION RF microneedling uses small needles to deliver radiofrequency energy into the skin. That adds a heating component to the needling procedure. Conventional microneedling does not include that RF component.

EXION Face is another applicator, separate from both of these. When reading a treatment page or watching a video, check the full name. A description of a needle-free EXION Face appointment does not explain what to expect from Clear RF or RF microneedling.

Describe the concern before choosing a device

Try describing your skin without using a treatment name. Do you notice uneven color, rough texture, fine lines, or depressions that remain visible in different lighting? Does the concern change with makeup, or is it a persistent change in the skin’s surface?

These observations can help guide the conversation, but they do not establish a diagnosis. Our article on acne scars versus dark spots explains why a flat mark and a structural scar may need different approaches.

DermaGlow describes Clear RF as a resurfacing option used to address concerns such as sun damage, uneven tone, fine lines, and texture. Whether it is appropriate for your concern still requires an assessment. Pigmentation, in particular, should not be treated as one diagnosis or assumed to respond the same way in every person.

For a microneedling recommendation, ask which feature the treatment is intended to improve and how the team will evaluate progress. The American Academy of Dermatology describes microneedling as a treatment used for concerns including acne scars and uneven texture. That general description does not establish that a particular device is suitable for you.

Compare the recovery that fits your schedule

For Clear RF, DermaGlow advises allowing approximately 30 minutes for numbing and another 30 minutes for treatment. The team’s general recovery estimate is around five to seven days. Redness, dryness, mild swelling, and a rough or sandpaper-like texture with small areas of crusting may occur while the skin heals.

These are planning estimates, not a promise that every patient will look or feel the same on a particular day. Confirm how the proposed area and treatment plan affect your visit, aftercare, and return to activities.

Do not apply that Clear RF estimate automatically to RF microneedling. Ask for the expected recovery from the exact procedure being recommended. There is also a difference between feeling ready to answer emails and feeling comfortable attending an event or being photographed.

Bring up travel and outdoor commitments before selecting a date. If your schedule leaves little room for recovery, discuss whether another date or another approach would better fit your priorities.

Your skin history matters to the choice

Tell the team about past pigmentation changes, scarring, cold sores, active skin problems, previous procedures, and your current medications and skincare products. Explain how your skin responded to treatments you have already tried, including those performed elsewhere.

Skin tone and device settings are part of the assessment. BTL lists skin-type restrictions for Clear RF at higher energy settings. A claim that one treatment suits every skin type in every situation would leave out an important part of choosing an appropriate plan.

Ask what would make the provider recommend an alternative or postpone treatment. Margarita Lupan, FNP, known as Rita, emphasizes realistic expectations and appropriate treatment selection. She may recommend waiting when treatment timing or candidacy does not fit the patient’s needs.

Discuss benefits and risks together

Both options deserve a discussion of potential benefits, skin injury, pigment changes, and other risks relevant to your treatment. Ask who will perform the procedure, what experience they have with the device, and which written aftercare instructions you will receive.

For RF microneedling specifically, the FDA’s October 2025 safety communication describes reports of serious complications with certain uses, including burns, scarring, fat loss, and nerve damage. Review the relevance of those risks with a trained, licensed provider. Before leaving, know whom to contact about unexpected or worsening symptoms.

Decide how the plan will be evaluated

Ask what improvement would be realistic, when the team expects to reassess it, and what the full proposed plan would cost. If several treatments are suggested, have the purpose of each one explained. More appointments are not automatically a better match for your goals.

It can help to choose one main concern to discuss first. For example, if uneven tone bothers you more than fine lines, say so. That preference gives the provider a clearer starting point than a general request for better skin.

Arrange a consultation in Calabasas

You do not need to choose between Clear RF and RF microneedling before your first visit. DermaGlow consultations include a facial and skin assessment, a discussion of concerns and goals, and an individualized treatment plan.

The consultation fee is $25 and is applied toward a treatment package if one is purchased. Contact DermaGlow Lab & Aesthetics by Tatarian MD or call 818-476-4880 to discuss your options. Bring your questions, treatment history, and the amount of recovery time you can reasonably plan for.
