Thinking about lip filler in Calabasas but worried about looking overdone? Margarita Lupan, FNP, known to patients as Rita, says this is the most common concern she hears from first-time lip filler patients. You may want a little more definition, restored fullness or better balance while still looking like yourself. Your consultation is the place to explain both the change you want and what you want to keep.
At DermaGlow Lab & Aesthetics by Tatarian MD, Rita is a Family Nurse Practitioner who personally performs all injectable treatments. Our practice primarily uses Restylane Kysse for lip enhancement. Her approach starts with your features and goals, then builds a treatment plan around them.
Start with the result you want
Try to put your goal into words. Perhaps you want a little more fullness, a clearer outline, or an assessment of a difference between your upper and lower lip. Also explain what you like about your lips and what would feel like too much change. Reference photographs can help you communicate a preference, but another person’s result is not a template for your anatomy.
Lip enhancement involves more than adding volume. Rita considers your lips in the context of your facial features and the balance you want to achieve. She describes a natural-looking result as one that leaves you looking like yourself, with a more refreshed and balanced appearance.
Understand the product being considered
Restylane Kysse is a hyaluronic acid gel. Its FDA-approved uses include adding lip volume and treating wrinkles above the upper lip in adults over 21. Rita will assess whether it is appropriate for your goals and medical history.
The Kysse patient information explains that it contains lidocaine to reduce discomfort. You may still feel discomfort during injections, so discuss available comfort measures and what to expect at your appointment.
Bring your health history and questions
Prepare a list of previous fillers or other cosmetic procedures, allergies, health conditions, prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and supplements. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends sharing this information before filler treatment. Some medicines affect bruising or bleeding; do not change prescribed medication without instructions from the clinician who manages it.
Mention cold sores, current irritation or infection around the mouth, and any previous reaction to an injectable product or local anesthetic. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, since the safety of Kysse in those circumstances has not been established. These details can affect whether treatment is appropriate or should be postponed.
Tell the team about upcoming travel, photographs or events so you can discuss recovery time and plan your appointment accordingly.
Rita’s approach is to start low and go slow
Rita describes her approach as “start low and go slow.” She says she usually begins with less than a full syringe, selecting the amount according to the patient’s anatomy and desired change. This is her individualized approach, rather than a fixed amount every first-time patient should receive.
She usually reassesses patients at approximately two weeks to evaluate healing and results. At that visit, she can discuss whether a small adjustment or additional filler would be appropriate. A reassessment does not automatically mean more injections; the next step depends on your assessment and preferences.
Allow time for swelling and recovery
Early fullness is not necessarily the settled result. Swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness can occur after lip filler, and recovery varies between people. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons describes this variability. Avoid judging your outcome against a photograph taken immediately after someone else’s treatment.
Follow your written aftercare instructions, including guidance about exercise, heat, sun exposure and any other restrictions. Ask whom to contact with questions during recovery, and contact the practice about worsening, persistent or unexpected symptoms. Urgent warning signs are listed in the safety section below.
Safety and when to seek help
Filler is a medical procedure. Complications can include infection, nodules and allergic reactions. Rarely, filler can obstruct a blood vessel and cause serious harm, including tissue injury, loss of vision or stroke. During your consultation, discuss these risks and ask how complications are handled. A conservative approach does not eliminate them.
The FDA advises seeking immediate medical attention for unusual pain, changes in vision, skin near an injection becoming white, gray or blue, or symptoms of a stroke during or shortly after treatment. Do not wait for a routine follow-up if these occur.
Understand duration and cost
The manufacturer reports that Restylane Kysse results can last up to one year, although duration varies. Future treatment should be based on your assessment and goals rather than a fixed schedule.
Lip filler is $600 per syringe, including a follow-up reassessment at approximately two weeks. Rita tailors the amount used to your individual needs and desired result.
Our consultation fee is $25 and is applied toward a treatment package if you purchase one. Treatments can also be purchased individually. The consultation fee is separate from the price of lip filler.
Your consultation at DermaGlow
Rita’s consultation includes a facial and skin assessment, your medical history, and a discussion of your concerns and expectations. She may recommend waiting, another approach or no treatment when filler is unlikely to achieve your goals. That willingness to tailor the recommendation is central to her approach.
You can also bring up other skin concerns. Rita can discuss whether a separate treatment or an individualized package would better address them, including how treatments should be timed. Your plan can account for the broader picture while keeping your priorities clear.
